O Come! – Christmas – December 2023

O Root of Jesse, standing as a sign among the peoples;

before you kings will shut their mouths,

to you the nations will make their prayer,

Come and deliver us and delay no longer.

O Radix, Advent O Antiphon

In the season of gradual preparation for Christmas, I’ve appreciated leaning into the tension of the now and the not yet. Advent allows us to grieve over loss, to acknowledge the pain and injustice of our world, to wonder at unanswered prayers, even to feel despair over situations we or the world face. However, at the same time we know we are awaiting the birth of a Saviour who will be the Light of the World, our Healer, our Deliver, our Rock and Redeemer. The Way, the Truth, the Life. He who will one day make all things new and reign in majesty. Emmanuel.

As this season has reached its crescendo, we can indeed shout aloud to a weary world, that He has come! Jesus, the Word become flesh to save us from our sin and lead us into freedom. We can indeed join with the angels to sing with all our heart and soul, “Glory to the newborn King!”

May you celebrate well this Christmas, enjoy good food, uplifting music, twinkly lights the warmth of family and friends and the good news of Jesus’ birth!

Merry Christmas!
