What is it that makes slime so irresistible to most small girls? I guess it’s tactile and soothing. We used to make ublek (cornflour and water) for poorly children in hospital; it was part of the whole package of therapeutic play.
As a mum, though, I’m not a great fan of it, as it creates such a mess, uses up our everyday household essentials (shaving foam, deodorant, soap, to name but a few) and I find festering, forgetten pots of it around the house which don’t smell too good!
However, when one of Dancing Toes’ delightful friends came to play yesterday we had a go at making edible slime, my thinking being that it could be consumed and hence avoid the decomposing biochemistry experiments around the house.
We had a book from the library, but experimented a bit. Marshmallows with a few drops of olive oil, warmed for a few seconds in the microwave and then kneaded together with cornflour worked well. The more cornflour they added the more like putty it became.
Half a cup of warmed milk, cocoa powder and sugar, mixed together with cornflour felt good, but didn’t taste so great. We wondered if adding some Nutella or sweetened condensed milk would do the trick. We’ll no doubt keep experimenting and see if our hypothesis stands!
You have endless patience and such a sense of fun and exploration!
