Day by Day

Light in the darkness – October 2023

During my childhood years I loved to spend time at my grandparents’ home. One memory I have in particular was of cosy mornings curled up on in one of their armchairs, drinking a milkshake whizzed up in Granny’s Kenwood mixer, and reading her latest edition of “The Reader’s Digest.” We used to look forward to this monthly treasure trove. One of my favourite sections was one entitled “Laughter the best medicine”. It contained a hilarious medley of true stories, funny magazine adverts and oddly worded signs. We chuckled our way through them, and repeated reading as we shared them only seemed to make them funnier.

In our increasingly troubled world we need to find ways to stay afloat; to seek out beauty and joy in the midst off the darkness. To this end, and inspired by those Readers Digest columns from long ago, I’m going to try to release a short blog post each month, in between the main posts, with five things to make us laugh or smile. I hope you enjoy reading as much as I will enjoy collating!

I prepared this post a few days ago, but in the light of world events which are subsequently unfolding, I don’t feel right about sending out what I had originally planned. So, here’s something slightly different.

PS I’ve never put in YouTube links before, so hope it works.

A grey day in Wells yesterday, not lending itself to photos. However, the stillness in the midst of the ordinary caught my attention. I hope you too can find some calm in the midst of your mundane.

One of three barrowfuls of pumpkins

I think this may be the result of my seed saving last year. Cross pollination between a marrow and and pumpkin. Does that make it a parrow or a mumpkin? Or maybe a pumpkini or a zucckin?

We saw this at a fun animal welfare day we attended recently!

“Nations are in uproar, kingdoms fall; he lifts his voice, the earth melts.

He says, ‘Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.’”

Psalm 46:6, 10
